Owning a Kymco AK550 is a bit like owning a grand‑touring scooter with a sportbike streak — brilliant in places, mildly irritating in others.
Engine performance — The 550cc twin is smooth, torquey, and genuinely quick. It pulls strongly from low revs, cruises effortlessly at motorway speeds, and feels more “motorcycle” than “scooter”. It has been totally reliable so far and I have covered 2850 miles
Good Points
• Handling stability — Low centre of gravity, gives confident cornering and is unusually sporty for a maxi-scooter.
• Braking power — Dual Brembos up front with ABS deliver sharp, predictable stopping.
• Comfort and ergonomics — The riding position is relaxed, wind protection is decent. Long rides feel easy.
• Tech features that stand out for me — Keyless start, On
The Not‑So‑Good Points
Electronics quirks — The Noodoe system can be temperamental, with connectivity glitches but it gets there in the end.
Weather protection — Better than a naked bike, although not as cocooned as a TMAX.
The mpg read out is overly optimistic will state 78mpg when reality is a round 60mpg.
While the bike is commendably smooth 90% of the time I am experiencing a the on/off throttle response at small openings, which makes the bike feel jerky when riding slowly, especially in traffic.
From what I’ve learned, this seems to be caused by the Euro 5 fuel cut‑off behaviour, where the injectors shut down completely on a closed throttle and then snap back in when you reopen it. It is only noticeable at walking pace and is irritating rather than anything else.
